On March 17th we held our latest River City Whisky Society Meeting/Tasting. With about 30 in attendance, we recognized that is was St. Pat’s Day so our theme was Irish Whiskey.
The five whiskies were all pretty good but one stood out as far and away the best. The whiskies were ranked by the taster, as listed below with #5 the least favored and #1 the most favored. Also, each whiskey below has a few comments from the tasters.
5th Place – Tullamore D.E.W. Phoenix – 55% ABV
Very light, Sweet nose, Little taste, Buttery, lacks complexity, Strong finish.
4th Place – Connemara Cask Strength (This is a peated Irish whiskey) – 58% ABV
Great peat/smoke taste, Overpowering, Light floral notes, medium finish.
3rd Place – The Quit Man 8 Years Old – 40% ABV
Sweet nose, Taste of honey, Nothing to write home about, Slightly smoky, hits the palate like a dry white wine, Fruity notes. Short finish.
2nd Place – Pogues (The official whiskey of the Celtic punk band) – 40% ABV
Light and warm, Light floral notes, Chocolate, Smooth citrusy finish.
1st Place – Powers John’s Lane 12 Year Old – 46% ABV
Spicy, Full body, Floral taste on the front with spices on the back, Creamy caramel, Lots of flavor, Beautiful smooth finish.
This was a good tasting. Ireland puts out some fantastic expressions that are worth exploring. The evening ended the way evenings should end, with cigars around the fire pit.
Cheer,
