Great 60 minutes episode on barrel making

Hey folks, check out the recent 60 Minutes episode on barrel making. Pretty interesting. As Doug and I have said, any tour of the bourbon trail should start with a tour of the Independent Stave Company in Lebanon, KY. They offer tours M-F. Well worth it.

The Presidential Dram

As mentioned in an earlier post, at our last meeting, Jeff, the owner of The Brothers Beer and Bourbon in Sunset Hills (https://3bhouse.com/visit-sunset-hills/) provided the group a sample his latest single barrel, The Presidential Dram, which is a 10yrs, single barrel, barrel strength at 128.1 proof. 99% corn, 1% malted barley bourbon from Proof and Wood. Proof and Wood is out of Kentucky, but this bourbon was distilled in Indiana at MGP. The Presidential Dram is part of their “DC Collection” and is only available as part of a barrel selection. They did this in collaboration with The Brothers out in Ballwin, MO and Grillo’s Chop & Barrel in Lake St. Louis, MO. Read more »

Whisky Room Transformation

Mark here again. I moved in with my girlfriend, and part of the process was moving about 400 bottles of whiskey, which was no small feat. Prior to me moving in, the room was my girlfriend first floor office. Before setting up my new whiskey room, we had new floors put into the entire first floor of our home. The room was located at the front of the house and attached to the family room. Once the floors were completed, I set off to install cabinets and build shelves for my whiskey. Seeing as I am not a professional carpenter, and I was mainly using my cluttered garage as my workshop, I am pleased with the outcome. All and all, it took about two weeks and cost around $1200. What do you think?

Small Craft Award Winners

Hey folks, Mark here, it’s been a while since our last posting, and that is going to stop. Since I am retired now, more time will be spent on keeping this site updated and posting other interesting whisk(e)y information. I may plan on spending time with Instagram and other social media. We shall see…

We had our March meeting at a favorite meeting place in St. Louis, or actually Sunset Hills, MO, The Brother Beer and Bourbon House (https://3bhouse.com). Jeff, the owner, is a member and his place has a great selection of beer and bourbon, plus great bar type food. The theme of the meeting was award winning whiskey from small craft distilleries. As usual, we had five different whiskies to try, and each won some type of award in the past year. At the end of the tasting, Jeff brought out a single barrel his store has, which we got to try as well. More on that later. Read more »

High Dollar Night 2024

Each year in July the River City Whisky Society holds its High Dollar Night. This is the only members only gathering we have throughout the year and we buy five or six expensive bottles for the tasting. This years six expressions have a total MSRP of $3,195. We did manage to find good deals on several of them, but they still represent whiskies that most of us would not buy because of the cost. Read more »
