Bourbon Trail Whisky Tasting

Posted by on December 28, 2009
On December 4, 2009 members of the River City Whisky Society held a Bourbon Trail Whisky tasting. One bottle of bourbon was presented from each of the eight distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. To make things somewhat fair each bottle had nearly the same retail sale price…around $30 (USD). At the end of the evening our tasters ranked them. The votes were tallied and here are the results (8 being the worst and 1 being the best):

#8            Four Roses – Small Batch (Four Roses Distillery – Lawrenceburg, KY)

#7            Russell’s Reserve – 10 yr old (Wild Turkey Distillery – Lawrenceburg, KY)

 #6 (T)    Marker’s Mark  (Marker’s Mark Distillery – Loretto, KY)

#6 (T)    Eagle Rare – Single Barrel (Buffalo Trace Distillery – Frankfort KY)

#4           Woodford Reserve (Woodford Reserve Distillery – Versailles, KY)

#3           Knob Creek (Jim Beam Distillery – Clermont, KY)

#2           1792 Ridgemont Reserve (Tom Moore Distillery – Bardstown, KY)

#1          Henry McKenna – Single Barrel (Heaven Hill Distillery – Bardstown, KY)

A couple quick tasting notes…everyone agreed that the Russell’s Reserve was not a bad whisky. It just did not have a lot of flavor. We consider it to be a great whisky for the beginner. Also, Tom Moore Distillery produces a great number of low cost whiskies so the group was very surprised by the 1792 Ridgemont Reserve. If you have not had the opportunity to try it, put it on you list.
