To Add Water or Not

Posted by on January 3, 2010

So, are you supposed to add water to your whisky? Or should you drink it straight ( or “neat”)? Is it okay to add ice? The answer is simple….You paid for it, drink it any way you want! I generally drink mine neat. I have, however, found a number of whiskies wherein a drop or two of water “releases” the flavor. In some cases the water will change the flavor. Abelour 16 year old Single Malt Scotch is a perfect example. Drinking it neat delivers excellent flavor but the addtion of water brings about a slight change in the flavor that is just as good as the original.

The idea here is that whisky is there for your enjoyment. Drink  it however you like it. When trying a new whisky I recommend  taking your first couple sips without water, then add a few drops and sip again.

Now lets talk about adding soda….No, let’s not.
