As mentioned in an earlier post, at our last meeting, Jeff, the owner of The Brothers Beer and Bourbon in Sunset Hills (https://3bhouse.com/visit-sunset-hills/) provided the group a sample his latest single barrel, The Presidential Dram, which is a 10yrs, single barrel, barrel strength at 128.1 proof. 99% corn, 1% malted barley bourbon from Proof and Wood. Proof and Wood is out of Kentucky, but this bourbon was distilled in Indiana at MGP. The Presidential Dram is part of their “DC Collection” and is only available as part of a barrel selection. They did this in collaboration with The Brothers out in Ballwin, MO and Grillo’s Chop & Barrel in Lake St. Louis, MO.
I was at first a bit apprehensive of trying this, due to the high ABV. But this definitely did not have an alcohol bite. In fact, it did not taste as high as I thought it would be. It’s cask strength, don’t get me wrong, but many at that high of a proof, the alcohol bite overwhelms the taste of the juice. In this case, it was the opposite. I think because of the quantity of corn (99%), that made the sweetness come first over the ABV. This is what Jeff says of the high ABV, “After revisiting The Presidential Dram tonight I have to say that it significantly mellows out the longer it’s been open which is to be expected at such a higher proof. So, any harshness that you might get on the first crack and sip totally disappears the longer this bottle is open.”
