Signatory Glen Elgin 13 year old in virgin oak.

While at Binny’s, Brett recommended Signatory Glen Elgin…aged 13 years in virgin oak barrels.

I bought bottle number 46 of 232.  It was distilled on 07/02/1996 and bottled on 08/24/2009 at cask strength and non-chill filtered.  When I first started getting into scotch I stayed away from the independent distilleries, and I don’t know why.  After going to a scotch tasting at The Wine and Cheese Place in St. Louis that was hosted by Ed Kohl and featured only Signatory products, I was hooked.   These guys at Signatory know how to bottle some whisky!  The Glen Elgin I had has a sharp fruity, clean smell, and not an overpowering alcohol smell as some cask strengths have.  The taste is fantastic!  I loved it from the start.  It has a fruity taste and I can actually taste the wood.  It actually reminds me of the wood taste in bourbon, as it is also aged in virgin oak.  Trust me though, this is the only similarity to bourbon, it is scotch all the way.  The finish is clean, and a little peppery.   I am glad Brett recommended this to me.  The price was right, about $50, and I wish I would have bought a second bottle.
