On August 23, 2013 we decided to have our first ever “Member’s Only” night. Most members attended and we had a great time.
Our tasting that evening consisted of five very good Irish whiskies. One, the Green Spot, was a special treat since it cannot be purchased in the states.
Here are our rankings of those tasted along with some of the member’s notes:
5th Place – Connemara 12 Years Old
Nice smokey taste, full flavored, shorter finish, strong ride and strong finish.
4th Place – Bushmills 1608
Sweet smell, mild sherry nose, malty pallet, very smooth, taste of baked apples and vanilla, nice chocolate finish.
3rd Place – Power’s John’s Lane
Sweet smell, fuller flavor, spicy, great fruit flavors, long finish.
2nd Place – Green Spot
Sweet barley, buttery, smooth creamy taste, mellow, refreshing, perfect finish.
1st Place – Midleton’s Barry Crockett Legacy
Fruity nose, clean burn on the front end, strong sense of nutmeg, oily, full bodied, good strong finish.
We also had a bonus Irish Whiskey brought by Bill M. (Member #33). Clontarf Irish Whiskey by Castle Brands. Their web site states that the Clontarf, after being triple distilled and aged in bourbon barrels, is “mellowed through Altantic Irish Oak charcoal”. Our members really liked this whiskey and described it in the following terms: floral scent, hint of smoke, taste of leather, easy to drink, long finish, very smooth.
Thanks to all those who attended and we will see you next time. Cheers!
