The August meeting/tasting of the River City Whisky Society was another success. We had 10 members attend and tasted five whiskies. The evening’s theme, as stated in the title, was Blended Scotch Whisky.
All whiskies were purchased at The Wine & Cheese Place (Clayton, MO)
Each of the five blends were tasted, discussed and rated by each person. Below is the list in order of least favorite (#5) to most favorite (#1) as rated by the tasters. Some of the tasting notes have been added.
#5. Haig and Haig dimple Pinch, 15 years old, 40% Alcohol, $32.99
Better smell than taste, Smooth and Peppery taste, Smoky finish, Short finish, A front-end scotch with little finish.
#4. Compass box Oak Cross, NAS, 43% Alcohol, $39.99
Nose of floral, honey and vanilla, Quick start that explodes, Very short finish.
#3. Isle of Skye, 8 years old, 43% Alcohol, $25.99
Nice Aroma, Spicy beginning, Light peated taste, chocolate and honey notes in the taste, Smoky finish.
#2. Pig’s Nose, 5 years old, 40% Alcohol, $31.99
Creamy nose, Lots of flavor, Carmel taste, Smooth all the way to the finish, Good all the way through, Nutty finish.
#1. Black Bull, 12 years old, 50% Alcohol, $41.99
Full bodied, Strong sherry taste, Chocolate taste, Strong finish, Could easily be mistaken for a Single Malt.
Each one was really good. One should never forsake the blended scotch thinking they don’t hold true scotch flavor and characteristics. The Black Bull was not only rate as #1 for this tasting, it was awarded the Best Blended Scotch Whisky, 12 years and under by Whisky Magazine’s World Whisky Awards 2011.
Additionally, Black Bull has a 30 year and a 40 year expression. Each are worth trying.
