At the most recent tasting of the River City Whisky Society we tried six whiskies. A couple members brought guests (Eric and Doug) and we gave away a number of attendance prizes that we acquired at Whiskyfest.
As usual each whisky was rated by the 13 participants with a “1” being the favorite and a “6” being the least favorite. One bottle was a mystery selection that was not revealed until after the rankings were done. All bottles were purchased at Binny’s Beverage Depot in Chicago and the results, along with comments from the tasters, are as follows:
#6 – Balblair, a 13 yr old Highland Single Male Scotch bottled by Gordon & MacPhails, $70 (purchased on sale for $50)
Not much flavor, initially sweet, a bit spicy, strong bite that masks the flavor, plain, long finish, strong alcohol taste.
#5 – Greenore, an 8 yr old Irish Grain Whiskey, $55
Floral aroma, clean taste, caramel taste, fruity taste, smooth on the tongue, smells better than tastes.
#4 – Very Old Barton, mystery bottle, 100 proof bourbon, $13
Spicy, smooth, easy to drink, high alcohol but good taste, fruity and a little sweet, excellent.
#3 – the Black Grouse, a blended scotch, $25
Spicy nose, perfect amount of peat, warm finish, smooth with a good finish, great smoky flavor.
#2 – Benrinnes, an 11 yr old Speyside Single Malt Scotch bottled by Signatory, $50
Very creamy,v anilla, very spicy & powerful, cinnamon flavors, fairly smooth, high alcohol finish, long hot finish.
#1 – GlenDullan, a 17 yr old Speyside Single Malt Scotch bottled by Signatory, $70 (purchased on sale for $50)
