glenfarclas-family-cask-1972-whiskyMembers only Night! We hold this event once a year so Mark and I can show our appreciation to our great members. We do this by having a high-dollar tasting for Society members only. Then we raffle off a number of items and have a great time.

The theme whiskies were all very good and they ranged in cost from $100 to $500 per bottle.

We did have the members rank these but the rankings, for this tasting, only showed which our club favored rather than being a ranking of better to worse. Here is the order we ended up with, along with some tasting notes:

1972 Glenfarclas Family Cask No. 3551, 2012 Release, 40 years old

Speyside Single Malt Scotch, 44.5 %, $500

Deep dark color, Wonderful nutty aroma, Leather and toffee flavors, Spicy, Raisins, Very smooth, Well balanced throughout.

1964 Lombard Glen Grant 40 years old

Speyside Single Malt Scotch, 46%, $400

Great body, Rich aroma, Taste of brown sugar, Cinnamon, Full of flavor, Dry with some sweetness, Warming long finish.

Bunnahabhain XXV

Islay Single Malt Scotch, 46.3%, $400

Smell of chocolate, Light sherry nose, Creamy vanilla, Too sweet for an Islay, Taste of mixed spices,

Perfect balance of peat, Fast finish,

Scotch Malt Whisky Society #35.10, Cask No. 1, Glen Moray, 39 years old

Speyside Single Malt Scotch, 46.2%, $325

Aroma of butterscotch, Taste of maple and fruit, Simple, Woody flavor, Cinnamon, Creamy texture, Slight smoke at the end.

Bookers  25th Anniversary Edition – From Jim Beam

Kentucky Straight Bourbon, 65.4%, $100

Strong with a nice texture, Sweet, Leather taste, Caramel and vanilla, Sharp sweet taste.

Signatory Vintage, 1985 Bowmore 24 year old, Matured in hogsheads

Islay Single Malt Scotch, 53.8%, $170

Heavy peat taste, Great peat punch, Lingering smokey finish.

I want to thank Joe Cavataio of Beam Global for finding the Booker’s for us. What a fantastic bourbon that was. Also, the cigar for the evening was the Brick & Mortar brand from JR Cigars (Dominican). If you get a chance try one of the smooth, mild to medium smokes.

To all of our members, thank you for making the River City Whisky Society one of the most successful whisky groups for 500 miles.

Cheers,

Mark and Doug
