And the Winner is….!

Posted by on June 30, 2012

The group met in mid June for a tasting that included three whiskies that cost over $100….the whiskies that most of us only get to try occasionally.  We had a great time.

The following is the results of the tasting along with a few notes from the tasters. As is custom, we ranked the whiskies against each other with a “5” being given to the least favorite and a “1” being given to the favorite.

Keep in mind that each of these are very good in their own right. But when you start comparing your personal favorites will stand out. The notes below each are from the 22 tasters. They have been consolidated for brevity.

#5 – The Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve, Single Malt Scotch, 44% alc, $129

Aroma of Figs and Licorice, Strong, Great Flavor, Dull, Great Nose, Short Finish, Chocolate Nose, Spicy Taste, Taste of Vanilla, Good Lingering Smoke Taste, Nose Was Better Than The Taste.

#4 – Redbreast 12 Years Old Cask Strength, Irish Whiskey, 57.7% alc, $57

Fresh, Taste of Fruit, Very Strong, Vanilla Nose, Spicy, Quite a Kick, Good Finish, Great Finish, Very Clean, Oak Finish.

#3 – Bunnahabhain 18 Years Old, Single Malt Scotch, 43% alc, $109

Sweet Smell, Simple Taste, Full Flavor, Taste of Vanilla, Complex Flavor, Hint of Espresso, Lightly Peated, Smooth Finish.

#2 – The Glenlivet 21 Years Old Archive, 43% alc, $112

Smooth, Short After Taste, Citrus After Taste, Great Sherry Influence, Sherry Nose with Malt & Red Oak, Sharp Peppermint Notes, Water Brings out the Citrus Taste, Constant Flavor From Beginning to End, Not Special Enough to justify the Price.

#1 – Black Bull 30 Years Old, Blended Scotch, 50%alc, $150

Nice Amber Color, Sweet Smell, Fruit/Cherry Taste, Taste of Toffee and Chocolate, Slight Tobacco Taste, Strong Finish.

Thanks to all those who attended and gave their opinion. I’m sure it was a great sacrifice to give up a Friday night to hang out with a bunch of guys, drink great whisky and smoke a few cigars.

I would also like to welcome our new members:

#28 – David S.

#29 – Jon M.

#30 – Joseph G.

Also, the River City Whisky Society has tasted 178 whiskies since its beginning in 2009. The list is also posted on this web site.

Until next time,

Doug #1
