Our June tasting was attended by 16 people and our theme for the evening was “A Tour of Scotland”. We tasted a single malt scotch from each of the five most recognized regions. Each was then ranked by the attendees. The following is the outcome, along with some tasting notes and comments:
5. Laphroaig Quarter Cask – 48% Alcohol – Islay
Strong taste of woodchips and honey. Lots of smoke, comes on strong very quickly. Too medicinal for several of our tasters.
4. Dalmore 12 year old – 40% Alcohol – Highlands
Nose is sweet with vanilla. Taste is creamy with notes of fruit. Finish was too fast and lacked a lingering taste. A higher proof would be better.
3. Glenkinchie 12 year old – 43% Alcohol – Lowlands
Good basic scotch, light and clean. Bold start with a nice, smooth finish.
2. Cragganmore 12 year old – 40% Alcohol – Speyside
Nose of honey and floral. Simple and classic scotch taste.
1. Isle of Jura 10 year old – 43% Alcohol – Island
Nose is sweet. Taste is smooth with hints of caramel along with notes of citrus (orange & vanilla). This is a well balanced scotch with a creamy, smooth finish.
At the end of the tasting the attendees hung around for another dram or two. Cigars were offered as well. It was another great evening for the River City Whisky Society.
